The Kugel Gips House, located in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod, was designed in 1970 by Charlie Zehnder, an architect who was one of the most prolific modernist architects on the outer Cape, designing homes in the region since the mid-century. The house was later abandoned for eleven years. The Cape Cod Modern House Trust obtained the house in 2009 to restore the house to its original design. The house now hosts visiting scholars, artists in residence, and is available for rent as well.
Zehnder admired Frank Lloyd Wright which is seen it the long horizontal lines and projecting roof planes. The house sits on a masonry anchor with wood decks cantilevering out into the untamed landscape. It is sited overlooking one of the Cape’s many interior fresh-water ponds.Walter Gropius’s daughter and husband have been known to visit this private pond to swim and to enjoy this stunning architecture.
