Teak is a stable and tightly-grained hardwood that is known for its durability and water resistance. Teak is a tropical deciduous tree with a reddish to brown heartwood and a yellow to white sapwood. With time, the reddish brown color will patina to a silver-grey color on the surface. For centuries it has been used in boat construction, exterior construction, and furniture.
In this house teak is used for the windows. While more costly than other materials, they require little maintenance and are immune to some of the disadvantages other windows have such as expansion and contraction, rot and uneven discoloration. The qualities of teak — beauty and durability — are ideal for residential windows.
This house which also uses limestone as an exterior material, is located in a northern neighborhood of Toronto within a landscape of connecting ravines. The design blends in naturally with the environment.
