Hans Jorgensen Wegner is a Danish furniture designer who lived between 1914-2007. He was a key player in the role of Danish Mid-Century Modern style design. His wood chairs are elegantly constructed with sculpted elements and organic, clean lines. Much of the joinery are considered traditional in its methods yet cutting edge in its design. Wegner designed over 500 chairs in his lifetime with more than 100 of them becoming mass produced. He put much emphasis on comfort and ergonomics as well as good design.
In his early years he worked for a carpenter, giving him a solid understanding of wood joinery. Later, he also worked for one of my favorite Danish architects, Arne Jacobsen, who is well known for not only his buildings but also his his housewares and and stunning ‘Egg Chair.‘ So it’s not surprising that Wegner had a good pedigree in the world of furniture design. His furniture is still available today through Design Within Reach, Carl Hansen & Son and of course the countless vintage furniture auction houses and websites.
