Barcelona Chair

In 1929, Mies van der Rohe created the Barcelona chair.  This leather lounge chair today still speaks to the simple elegance of Mies’ architecture and to his ‘less is more’ philosophy.  The chair has always been a classic for most architects and designers and can represent tasteful modernism in almost any setting.  The original black leather chair was designed specifically for Mies’ notable building for the International Exposition of 1929 for Germany’s Pavilion which was held in Barcelona, Spain.  Knoll now makes the chair in a wide range of colors and has beefed up the two pillows for a little thicker profile.

I love this chair because it represents structural excellence and good design with such simple elegance.  It is a graceful chair to look at AND its incredibly comfortable….not something you can say for all beautifully modern chairs.  Mies was a genius architect but I daresay that the Barcelona Chair could be considered his true masterpiece.
